Movies from an Eventful Life – Films by Renée Schwarzenbach
Renée Schwarzenbach-Wille, General Willes youngest daughter, born 1882 in Thun, was fascinated by the technical possibilities of visually capturing her life. She began to take photographs at the age of 14, and motion pictures from the 1920s onwards, using 16 mm films. When she died in 1959, she left behind over 100 albums containing more than 10 000 photographs, and approximately 100 rolls of film with well over 10 hours worth of footage. This material documents the extraordinary life of a woman who was married to one of the most wealthy industrial company owners in Zurich, but openly declared her love for other women, and also had an extremely conflictual relationship with her daughter, author Annemarie Schwarzenbach.
